I wonder why it is so easy to make our families into an idol? Is it that we, as Christians, feel we ought to have ‘perfect’ families? Where in scripture do we find that promise?

Or is it a reflection of our arminian backgrounds, the implication being what we do as parents (whether good or bad) sets the course for future decisions that our children will make?

How liberating it is when we come to realize that even in our weakness God still irresistibly calls elect children to Himself - sometimes in spite of the horrid mistakes we make as parents.

Check out Beth’s Blog for an insightful article on the Second Commandment:

You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
